The 2 candidates with the most votes are Dr Tan Cheng Bock and Dr Tony Tan. The difference is not more than 2% of the total number of valid votes cast.
The Returning Officer has allowed the recounting of all votes cast in Singapore.
Overseas polling in New York and Washington D.C. was not affected by Hurricane Irene which hit the U.S. East Coast sometime after polling was completed. The ballot boxes have been sealed and securely stored until they are escorted back to Singapore.
The closure of John F.Kennedy and New York Newark Airports will, however, delay the return of the polling team from New York. The situation is being monitored closely and the New York polling team will return as expeditiously as possible once the airports reopen.
The counting of the overseas votes will take place only after the ballot boxes from all the overseas polling stations have returned to Singapore. Under Section 32A (1) of the Presidential Elections Act, votes cast at all the overseas polling stations must arrive at the office of the Returning Officer in Singapore not later than 10 days after polling day.
As of publication time (28th Aug 0400hrs), no numbers has been released yet.
