As the Lunar New Year holiday approaches, travellers should expect a longer than usual waiting time as there will be tight security checks at the checkpoints.
Outgoing traffic through Tuas and Woodlands checkpoints are expected to build up in the week leading to the Lunar New Year from Saturday, 10 February to Thursday, 15 February 2018.
Both land checkpoints will also experience heavy traffic in both directions from Friday, 16 February to Tuesday, 20 February 2018. Travellers using both land checkpoints during this period should take note of this advisory.
Travellers Have a Part to Play
The BioScreen system has been progressively implemented at all checkpoints to capture the thumbprints of arriving and departing travellers. With security checks, traffic build-up is inevitable, especially when a large number of travellers use the checkpoints at the same time. Travellers are advised to adjust their travel plans if possible.
Travellers are reminded not to bring in prohibited items such as firecrackers. Controlled items such as ‘bak kua’, eggs and potted plants are subject to travellers’ allowance only from approved countries. For more details, please visit the ICA website at www.ica.gov.sg.
Travellers are also reminded to check and ensure that they are using their own passports with a remaining validity of six months or more before embarking on their journey. There have been instances of Singaporeans presenting wrong passports or passports which have been reported lost for immigration clearance. Such cases will lead to delays and cause inconvenience to the passport holders and other checkpoints users. Passports which have been reported lost can no longer be used for travelling even if they are found subsequently. They will be cancelled by ICA, and any attempt to use them is an offence under the Passports Act and may be punished by a fine of up to $10,000 or imprisonment of up to 10 years, or both.
All goods imported into Singapore are subjected to Goods and Services Tax (GST). Travellers* will be given GST relief on new articles, souvenirs, gifts and food preparations (excluding intoxicating liquors, tobacco and petroleum products) up to the following value of the goods – please refer to the table below. For greater convenience, travellers may also use the Customs@SG mobile app to declare and pay duty and GST before arriving at the checkpoint in Singapore. For more information, please refer to www.customs.gov.sg.
Time Spent Away from Singapore | Value of Goods Granted GST Relief |
48 hours or more | S$600 |
Less than 48 hours | S$150 |
*Holders of a Work Permit, Employment Pass, Student’s Pass, Dependent’s Pass or Long-Term Visit Pass are not eligible for GST relief.
