Thaipusam is generally celebrated in Singapore with lots of dancing and music to boost the morale of devotees. However, this year, no recorded music playing is allowed, no sounding gongs or drums, no shouting, no paint and much more. See the Straits Times article Thaipusam set to turn down volume.
This has caused some stir with Minister Shanmugam coming forward to clarify that there were no such new rules (CNA or Straits Times) on playing music or banging gongs.
Thaipusam Singapore 2011 Celebration
Thaipusam devotees carrying kavadis can be found in Singapore on 20th January 2011 at the following times at Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple (SSPT) and Sri Thendayuthapani Temple (STT):
And with regards to the playing of music and gongs
No singing or music, gongs, drums or music producing equipment such as portable radio and cassette recorder shall be played throughout the procession save for the singing of religious hymns relevant to Thaipusam, eg. Kavadi Sindhu.
