The Promontory @ Marina Bay will be the epicentre of all things local on 31 December as Mediacorp rings in the New Year with Let’s Celebrate 2019, a kaleidoscope of lights, music, fashion and fireworks by the leading lights of Singapore’s entertainment and media industry.
Hosted by Mediacorp artiste Sonia Chew and Chua Enlai, the event is expected to attract a 5,000-strong crowd and hundreds of thousands more viewers watching ‘live’ on Channel 5 and Toggle.
Let’s Celebrate 2019 will arguably be the biggest gathering of local music, fashion and creative talent on one stage. As a celebration of all things Singapore, by Singaporeans and for Singaporeans, audiences can expect a musical extravaganza featuring close to 100 homegrown artistes and performers, over 100 local production and crew members and, for the first time, an Augmented Reality segment involving young creators from ITE College Central.
A Celebration of Local Music
Singapore has a wide repertoire of musical talent, from budding crooners and songwriters to established names who have made it big overseas.
At Let’s Celebrate 2019, audiences can look forward to performances from Nadi Singapura, a Malay percussion group; Joie Tan, a talented songstress who started her musical journey on YouTube at just 14 years of age; Shak & The Baits, rising talents in the local music scene; Yung Raja & Fariz Jabba, an energetic and bilingual rap duo; Taufik Batisah, winner of the first Singapore Idol; Shabir, winner of singing competition Vasantham Star 2005; finalists from SPOP SING! including winner Jarrell Huang; the ITE Show Choir, one of the most sought-after show choirs in Singapore; Joanna Dong, jazz vocalist who shot to stardom in Sing! China 2017; popular singer-songwriter Gentle Bones; Sufi Rashid, the first Singaporean winner of Malaysia’s singing competition Akademi Fantasia; and local vocal powerhouse Aisyah Aziz.
Augmented Reality (AR) fans should keep a lookout for Gentle Bones’ act, which will incorporate elements of AR technology, resulting in a stunning spectacle for those watching on TV or viewing the big screens on the ground. This item was developed in collaboration with students and lecturers from ITE College Central‘s School of Design and Media and experts from local media company, Cgangs International. It is the culmination of six months of planning and preparatory work involving more than 4,000 man hours and some 1,000GB of data files being rendered.
A Celebration of Local Fashion
Let’s Celebrate 2019 will pay tribute to the cream of local fashion, featuring Singapore models and designers who have made a name for Singapore on the global runway.
Fans of internationally acclaimed Singaporean fashion doyen Daniel Boey will be thrilled to know that he is the fashion creative director for ‘Fashion Forward’, an item that celebrates local models and designers who have flown the Singapore flag high in the global fashion arena. Sprinkling stardust on this segment will be Mediacorp artistes Pierre Png, Romeo Tan, Carrie Wong, Sheila Sim and Joel Choo marking, for the first time, a collaboration between Mediacorp celebrities and Singaporean fashionistas as they parade designs by local designers for local audiences.
A Celebration of Our Talents in the Creative Community
Let’s Celebrate 2019 also serves as a platform to showcase the people in the media and creative ecosystem Mediacorp works with, ranging from the very established to the newbies of the industry. These include the show’s choreographer Fredy Kosman, a professional Singaporean dancer and popular YouTube personality; and music director Adam Lee, a highly sought after Singaporean composer, arranger and producer.
Irene Lim, Mediacorp’s Chief Customer Officer said, “Let’s Celebrate 2019 shines the spotlight on the diverse talents we have in Singapore – from our performing artistes to the production crew behind the scenes. For our final production of 2018, we are excited to be the platform that showcases the best of our homegrown talents. We are also thankful to our sponsors and partners for their tremendous support in making Let’s Celebrate 2019 an occasion truly worth celebrating for all.”
Admission to the show is free and gates open from 7pm. For TV viewers, they can watch the pre-show segment of Let’s Celebrate 2019 ‘live’ on Toggle at 10pm on 31 December 2018, and the main show on Toggle and Channel 5 at 11pm.
