Here are eight tips on caring for hobs, hoods and ovens from Harvey Norman with some Hari Raya special offers on combo packages. Built-in kitchen appliances such as hobs, hoods and ovens have to stand up to tough operating conditions — high temperatures, grease and hot oil included. You can keep them looking and performing almost as good as new with these handy tips.

Regular cleaning – This is key to keeping hobs, hoods and ovens in top condition. They should be cleaned after use, to prevent permanent staining and discolouration. Greasy deposits will attract dust and become grimy if left in place. Wipe work surfaces with a slightly damp cloth to ensure there is no residue from cleaning agents. This will help prevent surface stains.

Cleaning aids – Some ovens have a self-cleaning function to help burn off food or crumbs that are left inside after baking or cooking. The added benefit is that this doesn’t require chemical cleaning agents. If dirt or spilled items dry or harden on the hob’s work surface, moisten with a damp cloth and mild soap before wiping. Scraping dried items could scratch metallic or glass surfaces.

Correct methods – Follow the manufacturer’s recommended cleaning instructions. Abrasive materials such as metallic scouring pads may damage stainless steel surfaces. Wiping against the grain of stainless steel surfaces may leave scratch marks. The wrong cleaning agent may discolour the product’s surface, or even worse, damage electronic components if it seeps into sensitive areas.

Act fast – Try to clean spills as soon as possible, especially if the surface isn’t hot. Even if your appliance has a specially coated surface that stains less easily, it’s still a good idea to clean spills fast. Sugar-rich ingredients such as jam may caramelise and stain surfaces, or even lead to pitting — the formation of tiny holes on metal. Acidic fruit juices may also damage metal surfaces, so try to clean spills as soon as possible. Plastic containers may also melt if left on hot surfaces.

Safety first – While it’s important to try and clean spills fast, always check that surfaces are cool and remember to switch off electrical appliances to minimise the risk of any accidents.

Handle with care – Dragging or hitting utensils against delicate work surfaces may leave scratches or cracks,so always handle such items carefully.

Use the right tools – It’s also important to use the correct cleaning equipment. High-pressure or steam cleaners are likely to damage sensitive electronic components and control knobs.

Keep a lid on it – Opening the oven door constantly to check whether dishes are cooked causes the temperature inside to drop. This means the oven motor will have to work harder to raise the temperature. If done frequently while it is in use, this may damage the oven motor and the door seal could wear out faster.
