Everyone understands the importance of hygiene. However, little attention is paid to the hygienic state of refrigerators. LG has reinvented the concept of food hygiene with its series of ambitious new health-conscious refrigerators, and their innovative HEALTH GUARD™ feature which automatically cleans and purifies its internal air.
HEALTH GUARD™, named after LG’s Green Health Plus Campaign, places consumers’ health first with Healthy Cooling, together with the innovative Door Cooling. Door Cooling is based on LG’s expertise in health-oriented technology, to provide outstanding cooling performance through natural components and hygienic methods.
The refrigerator’s High Efficiency Compressor also does its part for the environment’s health, with energy savings of up to 26% and a yearly reduction in carbon dioxide emissions equivalent to 100kg.
“LG understands that Singaporeans prioritise health and hygiene, and that is why LG has in turn prioritised health and hygiene in its home appliance solutions well before the trend toward health-conscious products emerged on a global scale,” said Mr. Scott Jung, Managing Director of LG Electronics Singapore. “The launch of LG’s new top freezer is the culmination of a long process of research and development. This process has enabled LG to provide an air purification system specifically optimised for refrigerators.”
The Lactic Acid Ferment Extract-Based Filter: an Idea Inspired by a Cup of Coffee
Refrigeration is used to prevent bacteria and germs from growing on food, what many people do not realise is that bacteria can also form inside a refrigerator. This means that refrigerators should be regularly cleaned and aired like any other appliance. To save consumers the trouble, LG’s HEALTH GUARD™, a four-stage filtering system with a fan, actively sucks in contaminated air from the refrigerator and sends it through the powerful filters.
The idea of a powerful filter might not be new, but the novel idea that LG researchers focused on approached effective filtering differently. Taking an organic, food-based approach, their research eventually resulted in LG’s patented microbial lactic acid ferment extract-based natural filters. These filters create a superior sterilising and deodorising performance which protects health by filtering fungi spores, and eliminating 99.9 percent of harmful bacteria that could cause food poisoning or colitis.
“One morning, I left my cup of café au lait to sit until a thin layer of milk skin formed on top. That’s when I suddenly thought of lactic acid ferment extracts,” said Eun-jung Kim, Head Researcher at LG Electronics Home Appliance Company Refrigerator Laboratory, explaining the origin of using lactic acid ferment extracts as filters.
Lactic acid is a well-known nutritious substance globally consumed in foods like yogurt and cheese, and abundantly found in traditional Asian foods as well.
The outstanding sterilisation performance of LG’s HEALTH GUARD™ was verified by the Kitasato Research Center of Environmental Science, a prestigious test and research facility in Japan.
Optimised Air Purity through Organic Filtering and Deodorising
The HEALTH GUARD™’s filters are coated with a layer of lactic acid ferment extracts, enabling a purifying process that is both organic and safe. By comparison, many rival manufacturers use plasma to enhance hygiene, which emits ozone gases and can also have noxious effects on the human body. Other hygiene-advanced designs have utilised electronic and chemical approaches. However, none have achieved the eco-friendly characteristics that HEALTH GUARD™ boasts. LG’s organic filters are ozone-gas-free.
The secret behind the exceptional performance of HEALTH GUARD™ lies in the harmony of its components. The powerful fan serves two functions: it sucks in the interior air of the refrigerator and sends it to the filters, and also cools the air, further optimising the filtering process. The three filters and the deodoriser layer on each filter play essential, unique functions in the purifying process.
According to Yun-soo Kim, Head Supervisor of Sales Engineering Department, “After research and comprehensive testing, the four-layer configuration proved to be the most suitable configuration for refrigerators.”
No other refrigerator to date has displayed such advanced internal air purification.
This series of refrigerators with top freezers thus provides an ideal solution for fresher, more hygienic, and more natural food storage. It virtually eliminates the need for regular cleaning, and alleviates any stress over bacterial growth, particularly in the warmth and humidity of Singapore. The refrigerator also comes with enhanced cooling functions such as the Door Cooling feature, as well as an expanded capacity, thanks to the Slim Water Dispenser (only available in the GR-B762GSP) and Detachable Twist Ice-Maker.
The new series of refrigerators was launched on March 26th, 2012, in Singapore, in 570 litre net capacities, at the recommended retail prices of $1729 and $1849 respectively. More models in this new series will be made available over the following two months.
