From 6 October 2016, Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras will be gradually deployed at 60 more locations to deter illegal parking, and improve traffic conditions and road safety.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has been deploying CCTV cameras since April 2014 to deter illegal parking.
Today, some 70 locations island-wide are monitored by CCTV cameras, which have proven effective in enforcing parking offences along roads where traffic was previously impeded by rampant illegal parking.
By the end of 2017, CCTV will be used to enforce parking offences at a total of 130 locations island-wide.
List of seven locations that will be monitored by CCTV cameras from 6 October 2016.
- Benoi Road (both directions, near Fairprice Hub)
- Joo Koon Circle (Joo Koon MRT, near Fairprice Hub)
- Lim Teck Kim Road (opposite Genting Centre)
- Sengkang East Way (near Compass One) and Sengkang Square (near Kopitiam Square & Sengkang MRT/LRT)
- Woodlands Avenue 3 (Marsiling MRT, both directions)
- Woodlands Centre Road (before Woodlands Train Checkpoint)
- Yishun Central Service Road (both sides)
Since the implementation of CCTVs in April 2014, the daily average number of summonses per location has declined by 90%, from an initial 30 summonses per day to just three summonses per location in end-2015.
Traffic conditions have improved at many CCTV spots, including Collyer Quay, Jalan Pelepah, Selegie Road and Worcester Road. Bus commuters travelling on these routes have also benefited from the improved traffic conditions.
By deterring illegal parking, the cameras also help to improve road safety. Inconsiderate illegal parking can obstruct and prevent vulnerable pedestrians, particularly young children, seniors, and users of mobility aids from crossing the road safely. Illegally parked vehicles can also restrict the vision of other motorists by blocking their view of pedestrians who are crossing the road. Illegal parking at bus stops also compromises the safety of commuters as it prevents public buses from picking up and alighting passengers in a safe manner.
LTA has painted lamp posts or sign posts within CCTV monitoring zones with a bright orange vertical strip. LTA has also installed “No Waiting” signs at passenger pick-up points with CCTV cameras, such as near Bishan and Clementi MRT stations, to remind motorists that they are not allowed to wait at these pick-up locations.
