The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is extending the FREE pre-peak travel on the rail network by one year to 23 June 2015.

UPDATE 26 May 2015: Extended till 30 Jun 2016!

Commuters who end their journey before 7.45am on weekdays at 18 designated MRT stations in the city area will continue to enjoy FREE travel.

Commuters who exit at these stations between 7.45am and 8am will continue to be given a discount of up to 50 cents off their train fare.

The 18 designated stations are Bayfront, Bras Basah, Bugis, Chinatown, City Hall, Clarke Quay, Dhoby Ghaut, Downtown, Esplanade, Lavender, Marina Bay, Orchard, Outram Park, Promenade, Raffles Place, Somerset, Tanjong Pagar and Telok Ayer.

Data of commuters show that about 7% of commuters have shifted out of the morning peak period since the introduction of Free Pre-Peak Travel. This has resulted in a more even distribution of morning rail ridership.

The ratio of morning peak (8am-9am) to pre-peak (7am-8am) travel (based on commuters exiting from the designated stations) has fallen from 2.7 to 2.1. Capacity during the pre-peak period remains adequate.

In a LTA survey conducted in Sep 2013, most commuters who shifted their travel to the pre-peak period did so because of the free travel or discounted fare. 95% of them said they would continue travelling early. For those who had not shifted, two out of three said it was because they do not have flexible work arrangements.

To help more commuters shift to off-peak travel, LTA will intensify its efforts to encourage more organisations to implement flexi-work arrangements and other measures to support employees who may wish to travel during off-peak periods. More details will be announced at the Travel Smart Day in July this year.

The Public Service offers flexible work practices, including staggered work-hours, to help public officers better manage their work and personal commitments.

All of the more than 40 public agencies located near the designated MRT stations in the city area support LTA’s Free Pre-Peak Travel Scheme, and allow their staff to report for work as early as 7.00am, where the nature of their work allows for it.

In a July 2013 survey of public officers, 8% of public officers working in the city area changed their work timings and commuted before the morning peak hours.

To-date, eight in 10 public agencies, including those located outside the city area, offer their officers the flexibility to start work early (i.e. before 8am), as long as service to the public is maintained and they put in the required hours a week.

Receive FREE Ya Kun Breakfast Vouchers

LTA is embarking on a series of activities to promote pre-peak travel. Ya Kun is kindly sponsoring breakfast vouchers to be distributed at selected city stations such as Raffles Place and Tanjong Pagar on certain days in May.

Commuters who exit these stations before 7.45am will receive a breakfast voucher each while stocks last. For more info, click here.

On other days in the next few months, LTA will also be conducting other promotional activities at various stations.
