FairPrice Share-A-Textbook (formerly known as FairPrice Used Textbooks Project) is NTUC FairPrice’s signature community project that is conducted annually.
NTUC FairPrice first started the Used Textbooks Project in 1983. Pre-loved old textbooks were collected and distributed for free to needy students. The project was rebranded as FairPrice Share-A-Textbook in 2010.
The objectives of the project are to
- Promote a greener Singapore through recycling of pre-loved textbooks;
- Encourage the value of thrift; and
- Relieve the financial burden of families by providing free pre-loved textbooks.
Over the past 33 years, more than 3.9 million text books had been collected to help over 220,000 students save on textbooks expenses.
This year, the collection period is from 9 November to 4 December 2016. All books collected will be sent to sorting centres for sorting before distribution. All FairPrice stores (Supermarkets including FairPrice Xtra, FairPrice Finest, FairPrice Shop, FairPrice Xpress @ Esso Service Stations and Warehouse Club) will serve as collection points during this period.
Q: What and when is the donation period?
This is when members of the public donate their pre-loved textbooks for the project. All FairPrice stores (Supermarkets including FairPrice Xtra, FairPrice Finest, FairPrice Shop, FairPrice Xpress @ Esso Service Stations and Warehouse Club) will serve as collection points during this period.
This year, the collection period is from 9 November to 4 December 2016. All books collected will be sent to sorting centres for sorting before distribution.
Q: What type of used textbooks can one donate?
Fairprice welcomes all textbooks that are in the current syllabus (click here for list of books in current syllabus) and in usable condition (i.e. no torn / missing pages and no scribbling).
Q: Will FairPrice take in assessment books, story books or encyclopedias?
Yes they do, they will be sorted under reference category for the public to choose from.
Q: When is the *public distribution day?
Members of the public are welcome to pick up pre-loved textbooks on 11 December 2016 at any of the five distribution centers.
* Students under the Priority Collection Scheme will pick up their textbooks on 10 December 2016.
To ensure that books reach beneficiaries that are in need, FairPrice works with volunteer welfare organisations (VWOs) and Community Development Councils (CDCs) to shortlist students from low-income families who will be given priority to collect textbooks a day before access is given to the general public. About 20,000 students between the ages of 7 to 16 years have been registered under this priority scheme.
